Lumpectomy specimen image interpretation with volumetric specimen imaging (VSI) was compared to two-dimensional specimen radiography and tomosynthesis in two hundred cases. With a sensitivity up to 94% and specificity up to 85%, full-3D specimen imaging with VSI significantly improved the correlation between interpretation of the main lumpectomy specimen margin status and surgical pathology.

It has been a rewarding experience to participate in the retrospective study of Volumetric Specimen Imaging (VSI) and now lead the ongoing prospective trials testing the ability of VSI's fast, high quality, isotropic 3D images, to guide the excision of precise, targeted shave margins after lumpectomy for breast cancer.

VSI represents innovation distilled from decades of NIH-funded research in my lab at The University of Chicago. It has been my goal to translate these scientific leaps into products for physicians to benefit patients.

The very first time I used the Clarix System, this technology positively impacted the care of my patient. She had a known small invasive cancer that we had localized. With the Clarix imaging of the specimen, I could see an area trailing away from it up to the margin. This prompted me to take additional tissue. The additional margin was negative and prevented her from having to return to the operating room for a second surgery.

The Clarix VSI’s capabilities made a strong impression on our oncology surgeons, Drs. Potts and Machedo. After sharing the information with the Foundation Board, we decided to move forward as quickly as possible. We have all had experience with family or friends who have been treated for breast cancer. At Kaweah Health, we perform 500-600 lumpectomy cases annually. The impressive results from the trial surgeries convinced our surgical team we really needed this now! The urgency was evident - every day that we waited meant another patient who would not be treated with this game changing technology. From my perspective and my board’s this was unacceptable. We have shared the news with our community and donors who are thrilled to be a part of this fundraiser.
